The
Medcraft Letters, Minnesota
eBook
Version Is Now Available!
Over
the fall and winter months of 2009, I had been working on a project
involving the sale of vintage player and reproducing piano rolls-
as some folks may have noticed with just a little bit of reading
on this website over the past year. As these types of instruments
are not really my area of expertise, I found it necessary to do
some research regarding these rolls and the instruments that they
were designed for.
To
that end, I found myself digging around in some of my father's old
papers, seeking information about the Aeolian Company and other
instrument and piano roll manufacturers. To my surprise, I came
across a collection of letters that he had received from a couple
in England by the name of Medcraft, and set them aside with the
intention of reading them at a later time.
For
those who don't know, Harry and Sylvia Medcraft are noted for designing
and building a piano roll perforating machine which they put into
operation in about 1970, a time when very few people worldwide were
creating "new" replicas of Aeolian Duo- Art piano rolls.
In time I found an opportunity to peruse the collection of letters
that I had stumbled across, and I was nothing short of amazed at
what I had found.
A
fascinating aspect of the letters themselves is that the vast majority
were typed on actual piano roll grade paper, very similar to the
kind of paper that the Medcrafts used to create their Duo- Art replica
rolls. I read the letters expecting to find factual information
regarding the technical aspects of mechanical instruments, and I
found plenty of that. However, after reading all of the letters
I realized that as a whole they also told a wonderful and captivating
story! With that in mind, it occurred to me that the content of
these letters would be interesting to other readers as well, and
so in February of 2010 I set to work and compiled them into the
amazing book that I have entitled The Medcraft Letters, MN.
I'm
offering this book as a downloadable "eBook" for now.
I may be able to make hardcopy versions available in the future,
but for the time being the "downloadable method" seems
to be the most feasible and accessible way of distribution. The
eBook version of this work is 180 pages, with over 100 images of
photographs, flyers, bulletins, and other types of ephemera that
were included with the letters. It is available as an Adobe Reader
PDF file that is 11.04MB in size. For dial- up internet users, please
note that with a connection speed of 16Kbps the download will take
approximately 90 minutes. DSL and Broadband users will obviously
see much shorter download times. Adobe Reader version 5.0 or later
is recommended.
For
ease of handling and to avoid storage space issues, I have chosen
to host this book via the services offered by E- Junkie, a secure
and reputable file handling services provider. To purchase this
book, please click on the "Buy Now" button. Your browser
will open a new window and be redirected first to PayPal for payment
arrangements (although you don't need a PayPal account if using
a credit card) and then to the E- Junkie website for the download.
When finished, simply close the new window and you can return to
this website. The price for the book is only $10.99USD, and payment
may be made either through a PayPal account or with credit card.
Please note that these transactions are handled through my State
of Minnesota "Doing Business As" (DBA) name, which is
The Oscar Goldmann Overthrow Initiative. Also, if for some strange
reason you encounter any problems with the download, please contact
me via this website and I'll see to it that everything gets straightened
out.
I
hope you will join myself and others for an engaging journey back
to a time that my father once referred to as "the new golden
age of Duo- Art"!

LEXICON MPX 100 DUAL CHANNEL PROCESSOR
Even
though this MPX 100 is used, it's in fantastic condition. It was
purchased as "used" from the original owner in 2002,
& has spent all of it's time in racks so it shows very few
cosmetic blemishes. This processor delivers with the original
power supply & owners manual. It is in 100% functional condition.
The MPX 100 is a true dual- channel processor, meaning that it
can operate in true "L-R" stereo or in "dual-mono"
with two completely independent effects. That ability effectively
makes this unit "2- processors- in- one", allowing you
to send two separate mono signals in and returning 2 separate
mono effects to the mixer. Couple that with 24- bit internal processing,
20- bit A/D & D/A conversion, & a stereo 44.1kHz S/PDIF
output & you get an effects processor that's capable of handling
any job you throw at it. It also features a software- selectable
MIDI Out/Thru port, a headphone output, and 20Hz-20kHz frequency
response. Geez! Now that I think about it, if this Lex doesn't
sell in the next couple of weeks I'm going to put it back in the
rack and keep it for myself!

LEXICON ALEX DIGITAL EFFECTS PROCESSOR
-SOLD
Used
Lexicon Alex in very good to excellent condition. This unit was
purchased as "used" from a private party in 2001. That
individual had purchased it about a year earlier- also as "used"-
from Metro Sound & Lighting in Minneapolis, MN. It's still in
terrific shape & functions at 100%. It has spent all of its
time in my possession housed in a rack, & cosmetically shows
little to no wear or "rack rash". If you are a fan of
Lexicon processing, you know that these units give great effects
for the price, & the ease- of- use on these machines makes them
an indispensable addition to any effects rack. I actually have two
of these, & am keeping the other for myself! If you're looking
for stunning digital effects with true stereo capabilities, this
is the machine for you. The original power supply is included with
the processor. This Alex does not have an owners manual, but I do
have a manual for the one I'm keeping & would be willing to
scan it to .PDF & provide it with the sale. The manual is also
readily- available on the internet.

USED TASCAM PB-32H PATCH BAYS
Used
patch bays in very good condition. All circuits are functional &
all connectors are intact. The only cosmetic issues are a little
bit of "rack rash" & the pen ink on the front panels.
These units are normalled & unbalanced, with 1/4" phono
jacks on the front & RCA jacks on the back. Patch bays like
these are practically required when working with some mixers- like
the Tascam M- 520, etc. Because they are normalled, they are a great
way of managing Inserts or "Breakjacks" on mixer channels
or racks containing a lot of gear. These were purchased as "used"
back in 2005, & have been in the rack as pictured ever since.

SONY MDSJE330 MINIDISC PLAYER
With
remote control. Ships in original box with owners manual. The last
time this unit was checked it performed playback perfectly, but
was leaving skips in the media when recording. It may just require
a cleaning, since that hasn't been done. Skips may also have been
caused by choice of "non- Sony" media. In either case,
we have 2 of these in the studio here & don't really need them
both. If you've got Minidiscs that need to be transferred to another
medium, this unit will work great for you. Outputs include analog
on RCA plugs & fiber optic ports. Includes original fiber optic
cable.

SONY MDSJE510 MINIDISC PLAYER
-SOLD
Also
with remote control, & includes the owners manual. This player
records & plays back perfectly. It was acquired in a batch sale
of gear from another studio where it was only used to archive the
owner's personal recordings, therefore it has low hours of gentle
use. Includes 3 brand new Maxell MiniDiscs, 1 brand new TDK MiniDisc,
7 brand new Sony MiniDiscs & a stack of used MiniDiscs that
can be erased & used again. This recorder would be a good option
for anyone looking for an affordable digital unit to record practices

MiniDisc projects. Here's a great opportunity to get CD- quality
recording on a "cassette tape" budget.

TASCAM
MS-16 1" OPEN REEL RECORDER
Used-
but very well maintained- Tascam MS-16 1" Open Reel Tape Recorder.
Manufactured in 1987. This machine was purchased by my business
partners in 2002 from the original owner of Ballyhaus Recording.
It was in his possession for 2 or 3 years prior to the sale, &
had been purchased by him from a noted & respected recording
engineer in the Duluth, MN area. The machine was purchased by me
in 2005 when the Ballyhaus partnership ended. Because of my extensive
history with this machine, I am able to provide very detailed service
records & information & will do so for any serious inquiries.
This
recorder delivers in the following package:
Tascam
MS-16 1" Recorder; Tascam Rolling Stand with Meter Bridge;
Tascam RC-65 Remote Control; MRL Calibration Tape for this machine;
The MS-16 Operation/Maintenance Manual; Rec/Repro Amp Extender Card
(for use during calibration);1 Ampex Take- Up Reel; 1 Brand New
2500' Reel of Quantegy 456 Open Reel Tape.
Also
included is the following inventory of spare parts. I have attempted
to track down prices for these parts to give folks an idea of what
their value is. I've added prices to the list below for parts that
I have been able to locate. Please note that where new parts were
all that could be found, I have marked the parts below at half the
price of new or less since the collection was assembled from an
MS-16 that was parted out. I should also mention that as of now
Tascam has discontinued all of the printed circuit boards and "cosmetic"
parts for this machine. This obviously means that PCBs and cosmetic
parts will demand a premium price very soon. I will continue to
research prices and update this list, but as of now the prices I
have been able to locate and adjust total more than $1000.00. I
think it is reasonable to expect that these parts will be worth
around $3000.00 when priced accordingly. Read carefully because
there are multiples of some stock numbers-

1 52001622-00 Tascam MS- 16 Capstan Motor Drive PCB, Non- Functional
$32.63
The
original heads on the MS-16 were relapped by International Electro-Magnetics,
Inc. in May of 2005, & Ballyhaus invoiced about 40 hours of
use before the partnership ended. Since 2005 I have put about 25
hours of use on the recorder, so the relapped heads only have 65
or so hours of use on them. The machine was professionally recalibrated
after the relap. The heads have been kept clean & degaussed,
& the pinch roller has been given rubber rejuvenator regularly.
The
only condition issue that I am aware of is that the lighted VU meter
for channel 7 no longer lights up, but all of the meters function
perfectly. The meter has been missing the light for the entire 9
years that I have personally known the machine. I'm sure it's a
minor fix, but I never found it annoying enough to rectify. Access
to the VU meters is an easy, 4- screw affair, and the manual will
provide the part number & procedure for replacement. As a matter
of fact, the design of this machine is so good that I am hard pressed
to name an easier recorder to service. There is also one small screw
missing from the splicing block platform, which affects nothing
whatsoever. In my estimation, this machine is in "very good"
to "excellent" overall condition, & while you may
find a few others on the market I doubt that any of them will match
the condition of this machine or be offered in such a comprehensive
package.
The
MS-16s are a more popular recorder than even I had imagined. With
the cost- effective features of 1" tape and 15 ips operation,
they are very affordable machines to run. They give about 35 minutes
of recording on a single 2500- foot reel of tape. As with most TEAC/Tascam
products, they sound absolutely great. They can also be modified
to run at 30 ips, providing even higher fidelity. They are tough
& reliable, & are easy to maintain when set up properly.
This particular machine has been an exceptional performer, &
I'm confident that it has many years of operation ahead of it. I
also have a short list of vendors who still stock parts for this
machine- in some cases new parts- & will provide that information
to the buyer as well.
For
those who are looking specifically for MS-16 parts, I may be willing
to sell some of the parts in the collection individually, but the
Quantegy tape will not be sold seperately since Quantegy is no longer
manufacturing & the machine is currently calibrated specifically
for 456. Please contact me via the Contact page on this website
regarding individual parts or with any questions you may have.

TEAC A- 4010S STEREO 1/4" OPEN REEL TAPE RECORDER
Man,
what a cool open reel this will be! This is another batch purchase
acquisition, & it was purchased as "non- functional"
in 2006. This recorder runs at 3 3/4 & 7 1/2 ips. It accepts
line inputs on RCA plugs & mic inputs on 1/4" phono.
It has adjustable mic/line input levels & adjustable output.
It records in stereo or will overdub in mono. Here's what I know
about condition on this machine. The machine powers up & gives
drive on all motors. The heads, externals, & internals have
been visually inspected and appear to be in good condition. There
is a chunk of plastic missing from one of the Mic Input knob rings.
It needs a drive belt, & I suspect that the counter belt may
be a little soft. However, a quick Google search shows that the
belts are still available as New Old Stock & that the replacement
job is an easy one. I bought this as a "project machine"
but never got around to working on it myself. My years of experience
with TEAC/Tascam equipment tell me that this will be a great running
& sounding machine with just a little effort. I will be happy
to guide the new owner toward the belts & instructions on
the installation. This recorder would be great for adding a "tapie"
sound to recordings, & I suspect would make a fine mastering
deck as well.

MICROPHONE CASE
Used
mic case in good condition. This is very similar to the SKB cases
that are on the market, but this case actually started out as
a tool box. There is no manufacturer indicated anywhere on the
case itself. Needs a foam insert to hold the mics. This case is
in good condition over all. There are a couple of spots on the
hinge side where the plastic has worn through, & the previous
owner removed the 3- digit combination lock at some point. It's
included with the case so that it can be reinstalled if so desired.
The hinges, latches, and swing arms are all solid & operational.
It just needs a block of foam to house mics again, or would also
work well for storing cables, guitar gear, etc.

KOSS KTR/77 HEADPHONES, NON- FUNCTIONAL
This
set of phones worked great, until one day when they just stopped
delivering audio. I'm a bit of a "pack- rat" at heart,
so I kept them when my initial attempts at repair failed. I never
got back around to fixing them, but the last idea I had was that
the cable had developed a bad spot somewhere. They have good isolation
properties. They are very rugged, & stand up to studio use
very well- although I can't say for certain what may have put
them out of commission. They worked very well as monitor phones
for musician's use during tracking. They have a fixed 1/4"
stereo phono plug on a coiled cable. They're offered here- cheap-
for anyone who may want to salvage parts for another pair or attempt
repair on their own. These are the circled pair in the photo.

A
truly "old school" cable. Used but in perfect shape.
This cable has 15- pin male & female serial connectors on

out on the other. This cable was used for interfacing a PC and
a Tascam IF- 1000, but I'm sure there are quite a few other "retro"
applications for it. Total length is a little over 12 feet. This
thing was hard to find when I bought it back in 2005, it's probably
harder to find one now.

Only
identifying mark is a number on the frame: S20009 137 509. This
speaker has a "Jensen- esque" look to the cone design
& judging from the magnet size should handle 30 to 50 watts

12" ALNICO GUITAR SPEAKER-UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER
There
are several identifying marks on this speaker, but no manufacturer
is indicated. There are 2 numbers stamped on the frame: 285928 &
15865. The "horseshoe" magnet is stamped with D513-024706
& B34 inside a circle which may be an inspection mark. The back
of the cone is stamped 42-H-1802 in white ink. The multimeter indicates
8- ohm resistance on this speaker, & considering the type &
size of the magnet it should handle 15 to 30 watts of power. Would
serve well as a backup speaker for a guitar amp, a low cost option
to re- speakering an amp, or a test speaker for checking out enclosures
or amp repairs. These Alnico speakers are considered desirable by
many guitar players because of their tendency to "break up"

Used
horn in good operational condition. This driver was acquired as
"used" in a batch sale in 2005, & has been in storage
ever since. My idea for this horn was to hook it up to a Furman
HA- 6 that was monitoring studio talkback & use it for open
air communication from the control room. Like most folks, I always
wondered why studios had wall speakers & headphone talkback-
until I started having to shout "Put on your headphones!"
through 6 inch soundproofed walls! At any rate, this horn is rated
for 7.5 watts at 4 ohms, & would be great for replacing a blown
version of the same, studio talkback, or maybe even a DIY security

RADIO SHACK 40-1282C 4" MIDRANGE SPEAKER-SOLD
Used,
but only briefly & still in very good operational condition.
You probably know how it goes: You blow a midrange speaker, pick
up something that's readily available to get rolling again, &
then replace that speaker with the matching part. That's
how this ferrofluid cooled speaker wound up on the storage shelf.
It's obviously still good for that application, or may very well
serve as a direct & matching replacement part for a newer set
of speakers. It was purchased as "new" in 2004 or so.
It is a 4" closed- back speaker with 1/2" voice coil,
has 8 ohm resistance, a 2.9 oz. magnet, and handles 20 watts RMS/40
watts peak. Includes original box, installation instructions, &
16 uF capacitor. The only condition issue is a pair of slight "dimples"
in the dust cover, but still functions as new. The magnet is stamped
"M-1001-8", "8 OHM", & "MADE IN ROI".
That info may be helpful in identifying it as an appropriate replacement
part.

SONY 304- 115001- 00 4" MIDRANGE SPEAKER -SOLD
Used
4" midrange speaker with flattened dust cover. The back of
the magnet is stamped "304- 115001- 00" & "22JUL2000".
This speaker was purchased as "new" from a batch of Sony
aftermarket drivers. These are very nice midrange speakers, with
4 ohm resistance, 1" voice coil, & what feels like a 12
oz. magnet. I'm not positive of the wattage rating, but would guess
peak performance at around 80- 100 watts. It has a paper cone with
foam edge mounting & a paper dust cover which was pushed in
by an unruly child. I have managed to return the dust cover to its
original position, but it still shows a few "dimples".
As you may know, the dust covers on speakers serve no purpose other
than to protect the voice coil from particulates. This speaker has
been inspected & played, & retains all of its original sonic
qualities & performance. The photo was taken prior to this repair.
This would be a good replacement for an original Sony part. They
have a very nice, rich sound & I'm still running a pair of these
over 10" woofers & under 2.5" tweets.
